Sunday Afternoon Wandering

“One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter.” - Henry David Thoreau.

It was a balmy 90 degrees Fahrenheit on this past Sunday afternoon in Southern California. Even as parts of the country have experienced their first snowfall this gorgeous day emphasized why people continue to live in Southern California.

I resumed my local weekend wandering this weekend with a visit to the Grove and the original Farmers Market in Los Angeles with my nephew Nav who was visiting from England. I won’t be surprised to hear of him relocating to Southern California given the beautiful display the city put out for him this past weekend.

The parking garage was busy and it took us a while to find parking. Clearly people were out in droves enjoying the beautiful weather. As we wandered and browsed through the shops COVID seemed a distant memory.

A nod to the approaching Thanksgiving Holiday. Hard to believe that we are less than two weeks away from Thanksgiving.

The Christmas countdown has begun and the Grove is definitely ready. It certainly doesn’t feel like winter.

#ElGranjeroCantina was serving a Christmas specials liquid menu along with their traditional Mexican tacos and burritos.

#elgranjerocantina. We enjoyed the Christmas special Pomegranate margarita dressed up with it’s sprig of holly to get us into the holiday spirit.

Retail appeared to be doing a brisk business at least if the crowds stepping in and out of stores were to be believed. We did our own share of aiding the economy during our afternoon.

First opened in 1934 the Farmers Market is a historic Los Angeles landmark. It is an area of food stalls, sit down eateries and produce markets located at the corner of Fairfax and Third street.

A whimsical sculpture of kids enjoying a leisurely day in the sun.

And I thought all the bricks and mortar bookstores were gone. Clearly not here given the size of this Barnes and Noble. I had forgotten what it feels like to browse through books and magazines in an actual book store.

Well if you’re tired from exploring and don’t want to find a table and have a drink or a bite to eat you can rest your feet and your shopping bags for a bit.

Now this is a candy store! I think this one holds pride of place amongst all the colorful bazaars I’ve recently posted about, not in the chaos but definitely in the color and variety.

Either people are over COVID fears or fatigued from wearing masks constantly. Definitely enjoying the weather and the outdoors but most importantly the sense of normality.
